Single Premiere: Miss Emily ‘Stand Together Band Together’

Rock & Blues Muse is pleased to premiere multiple award-winner Miss Emily’s new single “Stand Together Band Together” from her forthcoming album ‘The Medicine’ set to release November 7 via Gypsy Soul Records. The album is a collection of soul and Americana-inspired blues produced by multiple JUNO and Grammy winner Colin Linden (Keb’ Mo’, T Bone Burnett).

Written by Miss Emily, the song “Stand Together Band Together” defines the very cornerstones of her commitment to community and celebration. As she workshopped the song on a recent tour, she would open her arms wide and invite the people to join her in a new song. It was a momentary risk but as the voices filled the room in unison, it was an affirmation that, in this unpredictable world, the communal celebration of music is the medicine that binds us to stand together and band together.

With a bluesy intro on guitar courtesy of Linden, Miss Emily tackles this song with grace and a balance of subtlety and break out vocals. With a full-bodied voice that simmers and shakes with soulfulness and pristine vocal tone, Miss Emily’s voice is everything a vocalist wants—the ability to blow the roof off a venue and the supple ability to approach a song as her own, digging deep the whole way through. She has it down, and speaks of unity and togetherness.

Miss Emily says, ““Stand Together Band Together” is a soulful singalong that embraces the idea that my struggle is your struggle, your struggle is my struggle and none of us gets through this world alone.”

From Prince Edward County in Ontario, Emily Fennel began at age 12 by singing at county fairs and winning every competition. Emily was stunning audiences with K.D. Lang’s version of the Patsy Cline song “3 Cigarettes and an Ashtray”. That song choice and her spellbinding performance demanded everyone’s attention. Just as she does now, 20 years later,

The passion and talent on this new record, was cultivated over two decades of playing in bars night after night along the highway corridor between Toronto and Montreal. That commitment and work ethic along with exhilarating, heart-wrenching performances, drew the attention of promoters at regional theatres and later, the Canadian blues festival circuit.

On the album ‘Medicine’ Miss Emily celebrates and reflects on humanity at its best, with the soulful, anthemic singalong, “Stand Together, Band Together,” and at its most vulnerable with the title track, a deep and empathetic dive into addiction and loss. “Solid Gound” was written nearly 20 years ago as a reflection of a parent’s promise to their child and the power soul ballad “Maybe” was a co-write with Fennell’s long time writing partner Rob Baker from Canadian super band The Tragically Hip. It’s a record filled with courage and celebration; the very cornerstones of everything Miss Emily has been doing for more than 20 years.

Other albums under the Miss Emily moniker include ‘Rise’ (2014), ‘In Between’ (2017), ‘LIVE at the Isabel’ (2020) and ‘Defined By Love’ (2022).

Just before her 39th birthday and nearly 20 years into her career, Miss Emily won the Canadian Maple Blues Awards’ New Artist of the Year. She won her first Female Vocalist of the Year category that same year and has since followed it up with two more of those titles in 2021 and 2023. 2022 brought an International Songwriting Competition win as well as a JUNO nomination (Canadian Grammy) for Blues Album of the Year. In describing her sound, The Globe & Mail got right to the point saying, “She’s got a voice on her: Big velvet thunder.”

Emily adds, ”I made this record 20 years after I released my first record. It has brand new songs that reflect the current state of the world and unreleased 20-year-old songs that are finally ready for their time to shine. I am a product of my experiences and the world around me and this album was crafted to connect me to the listener .Ultimately we are one big community of vulnerable, loving, suffering and surviving beings.”

At some point every night, on every tour, in every venue, she will open her arms wide and invite the people to join her in song. It’s a momentary risk but asthe voices fill the room in unison and celebration, it’s an affirmation that, in this unpredictable world, music is the medicine that binds us together.
