Twisted Country The Doohickeys Share New Single ‘Can’t Beat My Old Beater’

The Doohickeys are excited to announce the release of “Can’t Beat My Ol’ Beater,” the latest single from their January 24th release, All Hat No Cattle.

About the single, Jack Hackett explains, “Can’t Beat My Ol’ Beater” is a tune that’s got as much kick as a stubborn engine. It chugs along like a trusty ol’ truck and takes you where you wanna go.”

These clever LA country songsmiths bring a humorous twist to their unique brand of country music, an assorted mix of old and new, with intentional stupidity and clever jokes woven into the lyrics.

Jam-packed with West Coast twang and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, The Doohickeys’ debut album ‘All Hat No Cattle’ tackles classic country topics like handsy fella’s, tiny trucks, and LA traffic. Produced by two-time Grammy® nominee Eric Corne, with special guests Eugene Edwards (Dwight Yoakam), Hayley Orrantia (The Goldbergs, The Masked Singer), and comedian Jim Jefferies.

The Doohickeys have taken the World Wide Web by storm. Their parody of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” entitled “9 to 6,” has amassed over 3 million views, and 48k followers on Instagram and TikTok. These internet sensations have racked up +8 million views on Instagram and +2 million views and 24.1k followers on TikTok. The band’s first single, “Rein it in Cowboy,” won the American Songwriter Music Video Contest.

Jack Hackett and Haley Spence Brown met at USC while working on the TV station’s satirical news show. They both were pursuing careers in comedy and made many sketches together. On one fateful evening in November 2021, Jack was hosting his legendary weekend-after-Halloween party when Haley heard Kenny Chesney echoing through the spookily decorated halls. Right then, they discovered their mutual love of country music.

Once Haley and Jack teamed up as a country duo, the pair couldn’t stop writing songs together. The duo’s humor and clever songwriting immediately established The Doohickeys as a name to be reckoned with in the Los Angeles country scene. On a whim, Haley submitted the lyrics to their title track, “All Hat No Cattle,” to the American Songwriter Magazine contest. It earned an honorable mention, and the pair thought: “Hmm… maybe we should keep doing this.” Then in 2023, their song “This Town Sucks,” earned an award for ‘Outstanding Songwriting in the Great American Song Contest,’ and the duo thought, “Hmm… maybe we should make a record.” So they did. American Songwriter effuses, “While there is humor in the songs they write, The Doohickeys aren’t a comedy act, and these aren’t novelty songs. In short, they may be funny, but the music they make is seriously good.”
