Sue Foley Receives 2025 Grammy Nomination
The Recording Academy has announced the 2025 GRAMMY® Award nominees, with Sue Foley receiving a nomination for “Best Traditional Blues Album” for her acclaimed solo acoustic album One Guitar Woman, on Stony Plain Records. For this album Sue set aside “Pinky”, her trademark Telecaster, and with her expressive voice and a single nylon-stringed Flamenco guitar, created twelve tracks that pay homage to the female pioneers of guitar who have been her guiding lights and lit the way for her musical journey. The album honors icons including Elizabeth Cotten, Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, French classical guitarist Ida Presti, Southern blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas, Tejano sensation Lydia Mendoza, Charo, and country music matriarch Maybelle Carter.
Sue shares, “With One Guitar Woman, I’ve finally brought to life a dream I’ve had for years—to celebrate the powerful, trailblazing women of guitar. Seeing it embraced so warmly by my peers in the industry is an overwhelming joy, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Sue Foley spent her early years in Canada and started her professional career at sixteen. By twenty-one, she was living in Austin, TX and recording for Antone’s—the esteemed blues label and historic nightclub that helped launch the career of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Foley is a four-time consecutive winner of the Blues Music Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist (Koko Taylor Award) in Memphis Tennessee – 2024, 2023, 2022 and 2020. She was also honored as Guitarist of the Year and Blues Act of the Year at the 2023 Austin Music Awards, and the Lifetime Achievement/Blues with a Feeling Award at the 2024 Maple Blues Awards. Her album PINKY’S BLUES took home Best Traditional Blues Album at the 2022 Blues Music Awards. Sue Foley Live In Austin Vol. 1 (Oct. 2023) garnered significant airplay, and Foley’s first solo acoustic album, One Guitar Woman, was released March 29, 2024.
The 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony and CBS TV telecast will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, CA, on February 2, 2025.
Sue Foley is solidly on tour with her band in Texas and Canada through January, including select solo show dates. Sue’s in-demand One Guitar Woman acoustic show is more than a tribute. Foley doesn’t merely cover these artists’ songs; she absorbs their style and inhabits the soul of the music. Her guitar work is so deep and natural that it seems to rise from the same roots that gave birth to the originals, while her vibrant vocals bring new life to the lyrics and make the songs her own.
“The often spellbinding One Guitar Woman … is an enlightening look into her remarkable talents, filtered through the lens of a more intimate expression of the blues,” Hall Horowitz for Rock & Blues Muse.
