“Circus Is Leaving Town” is a driving acoustic guitar-based folk track featuring a nostalgic Hammond organ, evoking a classic 70s sound. Lyrically, the song delves into the theme of manipulation and deceit, painting a vivid picture of the aftermath left by a “master manipulator,” as described by McNelley. “Circus is leaving town is a song about someone you know. The master manipulator,” McNelley shares. “It might be your boss, family member, your ex, a politician, etc. They only reveal themselves once they’ve moved on. This is about that person.” The chorus poignantly captures this sentiment:
“I’m not sure what to do with this moment / slight of hand’s got me reeling right now / Trying to keep my world from crashing down / every time / I turn around / the jugglers and clowns / have torn it all down / the circus is leaving town.”
Rob McNelley’s career is steeped in a deep respect for finely crafted songs, which has made him one of the most sought-after guitarists in country music. Known for his great tone, feel, and melodic sense, he has contributed to numerous chart-topping hits, earning multiple ACM’s “Guitar Player of The Year” awards and CMA’s “Musician of The Year” nominations. His work spans across albums by an array of iconic rock and blues artists, including Lainey Wilson, Carrie Underwood, Hank Williams, Jr., Lady Antebellum, Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, and Delbert McClinton.
As a solo artist, McNelley channels his experience into crafting dyed-in-the-denim roots rock, blending country’s economic lyrics, blues’ urgency, and the anthemic hooks of 70s and 80s Album Oriented Radio. His previous single, “Right Back To You,” showcased his ability to blend Americana and pop-rock, highlighting his soulfully emotive vocals and expert guitar work. Produced alongside Justin Francis and multi-instrumentalist Russ Pahl, the song resonated with audiences, bringing a fresh yet familiar sound that balances modern radio sheen with classic rock scruff.
Looking ahead, McNelley plans to continue releasing new singles throughout 2024, with an EP slated for release later in the year. He remains committed to his dual role as a world-class sideman and solo artist, performing regionally and sharing his unique musical voice with a broader audience. Reflecting on his journey, McNelley states: “I’ve been fortunate to play with artists who have the Mount Rushmore of songs. When I play one of their songs, I always say to myself, ‘how do I write a song that good?!’ It inspires me!”
