Chris Smither Covers Tom Petty On ‘Time To Move On’

Folk/blues guitarist/songwriter Chris Smither has had his songs covered by everyone from Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris to Diana Krall, so it’s a treat to hear Smither’s interpretation of Tom Petty’s “Time To Move On” from Wildflowers.

“Time To Move On” features longtime colleague/producer David “Goody” Goodrich on guitar, with Glide noting, “While Smither’s own acoustic picking is irresistible and could easily support the track, it’s Goodrich’s bright electric guitar that adds plenty of lively flourish to this timeless track.”

“Time To Move On” is from Smither’s upcoming album All About The Bones out May 3. The single will be available on all streaming services on April 10. Smither says it’s “just a great song by a guy who had an uncanny knack for turning out pop hits that don’t sound like they’re meant to be pop hits.”

Smither turns 80 this year, but his tour schedule, including dates at the Iridium in New York City, Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock and two nights at McCabe’s in Los Angeles, shows he has no intention of slowing down. (Scroll down for complete dates.)

The sound and imagery All About the Bones is as elemental as the inky black shadows cast by a shockingly bright moon. The listener is welcomed into some gothic mansion on an imaginary New Orleans street, and there in the lamplit parlor confronts the band, a minimalist skeleton crew: Smither’s inimitable propulsive guitar and rumbling baritone are joined seamlessly to producer Goodrich’s carpetbag of instruments, Zak Trojano’s rock-steady, primal drumming, BettySoo’s diaphanous harmony vocals, and the flat, mournful flood of Jazz legend Chris Cheek’s saxophone.

Praise for Smither:
“With his signature beat-driven finger-picking, foot-tapping and playful vocal wisdom, Smither and company let the good times roll on this bayou blues, this Cajun dance party exalting his New Orleans beginnings.” —American Blues Scene “Down In Thibodaux”

“…stands as evidence that he remains one of the most consistent and truthful artists of his time, bridging this and the last century seamlessly and in a way that is never tired or imitative.” – PopMatters
