Rock & Blues Muse is pleased to exclusively premiere Americana singer/songwriter David Starr’s new video
“Poison The Water”. With his signature brand of blues/rock, this is the third single from his new EP, Better Me.
“Poison The Water” is a hard-hitting lyrical song perched on top of a sanctified groove that’ll stir your heart and mind. David Starr leans into his blues and roots music with stellar vocals and spot on vocal phrasing on this tremendous funky groove. Starr wastes no time on idle chatter and speaks truth to power, asking tough questions that will always need to be answered. His vocals are emphatic and urgent and his band matches his energy step for step. The music video for the track is artistically rendered and gives it another layer of meaning and intensity. Spin it once and you’ll feel Starr’s message.

Featuring John Prentice on electric guitar, Dan Dugmore on steel guitar, Matt Bubel on drums and Mark Prentice on bass, both Michelle Prentice and Reverend Joseph Rice sing rich layers of background vocals in a call and response. Recorded at Addiction Sound Studios in Nashville, “Poison The Water” is produced by Starr and Mark Prentice.
Starr says, “I wrote ‘Poison The Water’ back in the early 90s in response to some toxicity in my personal life and in the politics of the day. My personal life‘s a lot better now, but the politics have only gotten worse. At the time, the song was about asking out loud why some people can’t just be happy with things as they are…some folks just can’t help but poison the water!”
The Colorado singer-songwriter David Starr has released ten acclaimed albums and has toured internationally, opening shows for John Oates (Hall & Oates), America, Karla Bonoff, The Steel Wheels, Survivor and more. His latest project, Touchstones, featured a new digital single release every month for one year, culminating in a full album in December 2021. Touchstones follows Starr’s acclaimed February 2020 record, Beauty & Ruin. Produced and arranged by John Oates, the collection of songs was inspired by Of What Was, Nothing Is Left, a novel written by Starr’s grandfather in 1972.
Starr’s prestige extends beyond the stage as well, having launched Starr’s Guitars in Little Rock in 1998, then relocating to Cedaredge in 2001. Today, the store is such an institution that Cedaredge proclaimed the musician’s birthday as David Starr Day in 2016. Starr was also instrumental in the 2018 opening of the Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center, an intimate event space brought to fruition through strong community support. His latest EP, Better Me, includes the title track as the first single, with a new collection of long-awaited originals to follow including “Closer To You” and the latest single “Poison The Water.”
Having just toured non-stop in the UK, Ireland, he is currently performing in the Midwest, Montana, Texas, California and all over Colorado.
