William Bell, One Day Closer To Home
The legendary soul vocalist/songwriter William Bell has released his new single and video “One Day Closer To Home,” from his forthcoming album of the same name, out soon. Bell and Emmy Award-winning film composer Scott Bomar crafted an instant classic infused with blues and Americana.
Bell co-wrote “Born Under A Bad Sign” with Booker T Jones, first recorded by Albert King and then by Cream. Earning a Grammy Award for his 2017 album This Is Where I Live, Bell performed his hit “Born Under A Bad Sign” alongside Gary Clark Jr at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
“One Day Closer To Home” is a master class on how to put down the deepest kind of blues from a lifetime achiever. With tremendous groove, the song leans into his signature, soulful sound. Bell doesn’t waste a note, word, or bar telling this story of trying to get back to freedom and he makes you believe every bit of it. His vocal delivery is heart-wrenching, loaded with hope and despair all at once. Both the instrumentation and the track’s music video are austere and minimal, which keeps the focus on Bell, where it belongs. It’s an outstanding song that will catch you and keep you.

The Memphis-born William Bell collaborated with Southern Avenue on their single “We’ve Got The Music” and performed at the 2019 Blues Music Awards. He was nominated for Best Soul Blues Male Artist.
Considered one of the main voices of the Stax-Volt sound, Bell was featured in the Memphis 2014 documentary Take Me To The River along with Bobby Bland, Mavis Staples and Snoop Dogg.
Bell has received many awards, including the R&B Pioneer Award from Rhythm and Blues Foundation, the W.C. Handy Heritage Award from the Memphis Music Foundation and the BMI Songwriter’s Award. He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame and received the Epitome of Soul Award, presented to him by Stevie Wonder. He’s also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Americana Music Association.
Born in Memphis Tennessee, Bell was signed on Stax Records as a songwriter alongside Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes and The Staple Singers. He was the first male solo act signed to the label. After finishing his time in the military, Bell released his debut album The Soul of a Bell on Stax in 1967.
Bell’s songs have been covered by music icons from Jimi Hendrix to Warren Haynes, Robert Cray, Melissa Etheridge, Etta James, Hall & Oates, and more. His other hits at Stax were “Any other Way” covered by Chuck Jackson, “A Tribute To A King” written for his friend Otis Redding, and “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” (covered by Billy Idol and more).
Mr. Bell has released 15 studio albums so far, two compilation albums, and many singles.
