Buddy Guy Reveals New Single “We Go Back” Ft. Mavis Staples

Blues legend Buddy Guy reveals his new and second single “We Go Back” featuring Mavis Staples from his new album The Blues Don’t Lie, set to release September 30th via RCA Records. Guy’s forthcoming album features contributions from Bobby Rush, Elvis Costello, James Taylor, Jason Isbell and more. The album is produced by Grammy winner Tom Hambridge, and a follow up to his Grammy winning album, The Blues Is Alive And Well (2018.)

“We Go Back” is some of the deepest blues you’re likely to encounter. Buddy Guy and Mavis Staples are both giants of American music and this song is about what they went through on their journeys. It deals lyrically with the good and bad days when, as the song says, “the blues was everywhere.” It’s about the civil rights movement, Dr. King, and the hard times they both endured and survived.

Guy and Staples trade verses about going back to the tragic day when Martin Luther King was shot in Memphis. With powerful vocals, the two of them reflect on that event, and the struggle to get ahead during hard times–storytelling magic. It’s a haunting piece of music that uses more space than notes to tell it’s story, which keeps your attention on its message. The release date of September 30 for The Blues Don’t Lie, marks the 65th anniversary of Buddy Guy’s arrival to Chicago from Louisiana, before he became one of the blues greats. The album tells the story of his life’s journey.

At 86 years-old, Buddy Guy is one of the world’s pre-eminent blues legends, known for his entertaining live shows and his stunning talent on guitar. With a life-long commitment to keeping the blues alive, Buddy Guy has influenced generations of guitarists including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr, and more. In the 1960s, Buddy played with Muddy Waters as a session guitarist for Chess Records and began a musical partnership with Junior Wells. In addition to the eight Grammys, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Guy has won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, national Medal of Arts and Kennedy Center Honors. He has become one of the most recognizable blues artists of the Chicago Blues sound.
