20 Modern Rock Bands You Need To Know About 2022
By Martine Ehrenclou
As we head into Fall, what better time to jumpstart the thrill of music discovery. There are many top-tier modern rock bands and we think you need to know about twenty of them, for this article anyway. Even with Spotify playlists, it’s not always easy to keep track of all the new music that’s coming your way. Here’s a place to check out some of these bands and sample their music.
You might feel that outstanding music is confined to the 60s or 70s greats. I can’t count the number of people who have confessed to having no idea that there was so much truly great new rock music. If you’re ready for a music feast, check it out below. I know you’ll be delighted by the choices.
These are modern rock outfits who have fairly recently released or are soon to release new music. Not blues/rock per say, but downright earth shaking rock & roll with highly talented musicians and songwriters. I’ve compiled a list with information, videos and the bands’ websites so you can dig a little deeper into those you’re interested in.
There’s nothing like rock music cranked loud. So, get ready. You’re about to embark on some great music from the U.S., UK, Canada, France, Scandinavia and other parts of the world. Some draw influences from some of the greats, and others have a new contemporary rock & roll sound all their own. Each of these modern rock bands are hand-picked because I think they’re really good. For the most part, you won’t find head-banging rock, heavy metal or arena rock here.
This is real music by real musicians. A few of these bands are fairly well known and others are on the crest of the upward swell. Either way, each demands to be heard at peak volume to savor the quality of the songs and musicianship.
The bands listed here are in no particular order. Spotify Playlist Below.
I welcome your comments and suggestions below. I’ve incorporated a number of your band suggestions into this article. So, thank you.

They might have been described as Led Zeppelin knock-offs early on, but not after their latest album, The Battle At Garden’s Gate, an expansive, elegant and aggressive album that reminds us that music is still made for the people. Updated April 2023: Greta Van Fleet is poised to come back to the world stage with a tour that will run from July through September of 2023. Some of the places fans will be able to hear some of the music described in this article include Madison Square Garden and the Sea.Hear.Now Festival. Great read and super bands. I would add Alterbridge
I think they mean new modern rock bands. Alter Bridge have been around for 20 years.
Didn’t I see Dan Reed Network in there? They’re coming up on 40 years old.
Nice list, thanks you….would keep an eye out for Robert Jon and the Wreck out of Socal
So GOOD!
I’m looking into these bands. Several I do know about. Many are new.
The Damn Truth are back in the UK in October. Always a great show.
Great list. May I add Riverghost & Mojothunder ?
Thanks for this list, there’s lots of bands I’ve not heard of to check out! It’s great seeing you add The Steepwater Band to your list.. they’re awesome!
I would also suggest, if you’re not familiar, Quaker City Night Hawks. Also Ape Machine if you like that Zeppelin/ Sabbath/Deep Purple kinda riffing rock style. And one more.. Radio Moscow is an awesome psychedelic blues rock band.
Thanks again!
Great list! Some I’m big fans of, some I’m not familiar with, some I’ve heard and need to check out further, and even one, Georgia Thunderbolts from my neck of the woods. Excellent list!
Great Read!
Love the boys from Georgia making noise, but you left out some as you did the same the past couple of years. Start with Them Dirty Roses, The Comancheros, Jive Mother Mary, Robert John and The Wreck, Rob Leines just to name a few
Todd,
You’re going to have to read our online magazine more often. We’ve featured Robert Jon & the Wreck in so many ‘best of’ articles, and in features. We’ve also featured Jive Mother Mary too and Them Dirty Roses.
Some great choices there, but you need to add The Warning, a Mexican power trio of 3 sisters. Amazing hard rock and tear inducing ballads.
You ain’t lying!
Was hoping someone would bring them up. They are a powerful rock band considering their ages. Good call.
Three of my faves on this list! Black stone Cherry , Tyler Bryant and the shakedown, and the Georgia thunderbolts!
The Record company is awesome too
Ace Monroe, a band out of Nashville, should be at the top of this list!
Joyous Wolf is a great band that released an amazing EP on CD a couple of years ago. Patiently waiting for them to release their first full album.
Love Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey and a lack Stone Cherry. I would add Mammoth WVH or the list!!
Typed that too dang early in the morning!! Should be Black Stone Cherry, and add Mammoth WVH TO the list.
Lora, Black Stone Cherry is already in the list.
Greta Van Fleet is my favorite band! Love Dirty Honey and Rival Sons. Would add Dorothy, (a total powerhouse) and Joyous Wolf, and watch for Classless Act!
Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey, and Rival Sons are my favorite bands; glad to see them on your list. Just an FYI, Rival Sons drummer is Michael MILEY, not Mikey.
I would add The Warning to this list, these ladies are amazing.
gotta have Des Rocs on it or it’s just incomplete
Liliac is another one to watch.
You should check out Electric Mob.
Black Moods! Excellent choice!! I would also add Otherwise!
Canadian bad boys The Glorious Sons should be on this list. They are selling out arenas up north.
How about Måneskin?
Where does an alternative rock head go for new music today? Any recommendation? I love Foo Fighters, Incubus, Live, Muse, Radiohead, Weezer, Duran Duran, Pixies, Depeche Mode, etc.
Thanks.
You should check out “Raue”. They will be right up your music alley. Amazing new band that will be a common name soon.
I would absolutely recommend Maneskin!!

Papadosio
Check out GrandVille out of Athens GA, best original music out of 21 year old players I’ve ever seen
Check out Exit73. They are selling out venues all over Michigan.
If you are interested in a fresh, DC based, straight ahead hard rocking, no nonsense band with some kick ass riffs, lyrics, and melodies, check out Chay Vicious. https://linktr.ee/chayvicious
Greta van Fleet is not Lava’s best artist the Warning is
