People complain about current pop music because of the lack of soulfulness, a lack of authenticity, manufactured drum beats, compressed auto-tuned vocals and more. They say there aren’t bands or artists today like Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Three Kings, and more. And I get that. People miss the real musicians, the greats who created their own styles and sounds.
There is an overwhelming number of truly outstanding artists and bands out there now—current recording and performing musicians who are authentic, highly talented, and who release great music.
Here’s the antidote to today’s popular music. These 50 modern blues, rock, and Southern soul artists are some of my personal favorites. This isn’t a top list of the best or worst. This isn’t a year-end list of the best albums or songs. This is just great music. It doesn’t include all of my favorites because the list would be too long.
Since the writing of the this article, many of you suggested artists and bands that you thought should be included. Here is the newer additional article with many of your contributions. Click here “YOUR Additions to 50 Modern Blues Rock Soul Artists You Must Hear 2019.“ Between the two articles, you will find 50 additional artists and bands to sample and enjoy. That makes 100 artists and bands in total.
I purposely tried not to include all of the well known musicians. You’ll come across familiar and celebrated names here, I’m sure.
Each name has a link to a review with video and info about the artist, or a link to a video, artist’s website or Facebook page.
I welcome your comments below in the comment section. I’ll publish them with your first name only in another article.
I hope you enjoy.

Please share your favorite artists and bands in the comment section below.
Are you aware of Jeremiah Johnson band out of St. Louis? The band just finished up a tour in Europe with Mike Zito.
https://jeremiahjohnsonband.com/
Check out Noah Wortherspoon out of Ohio and Davina and the Vagabonds out of Minnesota. Glad to see Davey Knowles name on there. First saw him on the Isle of Man when his Manx band opened for the Who.
Chris Cain. Blues master.
Saw Davian/vagabonds recently. Absolutely. Yes!
I was surprised as well jjb
Where’s Ryan Mcgarvey!?!
Les,
Ryan came off the list when I thought 80 artists and bands was too many. But I’m beginning to think that doesn’t matter. I’ll put him back in. Thanks.
Great article, but you need to include Ronnie Baker Brooks. Son of legendary Lonnie Brooks. I have seen him several times and he puts on a helluva show. Unbelievable guitarist, great showman, and just a great guy. Saw him a week or so ago at a small venue outside of Chicago and he blew the roof off the place. I’ve seen a lot of shows in my lifetime and RBB’s show ranks alongside the best.
Can say you are correct ! GREAT call RBB AWESOME all the way
You should include Magnolia Bayou out of Gulfport, Mississipp. Great young band with a large collection of original rock, blues, funk, and psychelic music.
Take a look @ The Bluesbones
Fantastic list!
Bobby Rush
Vance Kelly
You forgot the greatest Southern Rock band on the planet, Blackberry Smoke!
Look again
HUGE YES!! For Ronnie Baker Brooks. Fellow Chicagoan and son of Lonnie Brooks. He played at a small venue outside of Chicago a week or so ago and just blew up the place! Great guitarist, great vocalist and puts on one HELLUVA show!
Agree!
Great list. Hope you continue to do this periodically!
David,
Thank you. Good idea to do this periodically. Or maybe just keep updating the list until it becomes the handbook for blues, rock and southern soul.
Wow what a list. Never heard of a lot of these will check them out thank you. Always looking for new music. Check out Sister Cookie!!!! From London UK….. shes amazing! blues soul jazz rocknroll and more…. she writes and plays the piano too plus she’s funny as ****
Frank,
Welcome. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for your suggestion. Will do.
Thanks for your list and your passion. Jarekus Singleton is right in there with Selwyn Birchwood. Powerful player and back story. Eric Lindell for southern gulf coast soul/blues. JJ Grey has deep southern soul roots from Florida. Look forward to your email and updates. Live music makes your soul perk.
Thanks for your suggestions. Love that-live music makes your soul perk.
Hi Martine. Thanks for your reply. Have just been listening to the Boneshakers – wow! Love it. Gr8 sound. Will make my way through more og your recommendations. Btw Check out this video of Sister Cookie singin Nina Simone it sends shivers up my spine!! https://youtu.be/VxaBt9_Y1Ho
Ben Rice from Portland OR
Totally agree!
Johnny Mastro and the Mama’s Boys!!!
https://www.johnnymastro.com
They should definitely be on this and many other lists. Give a listen, your ear holes will thank you.
WOW & THANK you for that tip ! OUTSTANDING
It’s about time these artists get there due this is the only music I’ve listened to for the past 10 years stop listening to FM radio to much talk same thing all the time
Wow Martine, another incredible article, well done!! Fortunately I’ve heard of most of these incredible musicians because of you and your incredible FB page, rockandbluesmuse, keep up the great work, and as always, keep spreading the blues and rock news!!!
Nutman,
Thank you. And thanks for commenting.
Out of the wilds of Williamstown, Ma comes the thundering guitar work of Albert Cummings. Check him out at http://www.albertcummings.com you’ll thank me later
Bob,
Thank you for mentioning Albert Cummings. Thundering guitar work is so right. We’ve reviewed him several times. He was in the article but somehow dropped off. He’s back in. Thank you!
He is in the list.
Black Banjo
http://www.facebook.com/blackbanjoband
Thanks for the list. I’m familiar with alot of them. And alot of them I’m looking forward to listening too thanks to your recommendation. Also we saw a band a couple of years ago from Canada called the Sheep Dogs. They opened the show for Rival Sons a couple of weeks ago. Sheep Dogs are a really good soulful rock band. This weekend we will see Walter Trout and Eric Gales in the Caverns! Should be a great show. Both of those guys are usually very loud. It’s going to be interesting in a cave :)
Saw the sheep Dogs support Rival Sons last year, awesome band…fun and colourful and rock n roll
I’d add Chris Cain and Ronnie Baker Brooks.
Rock/pop/blues
Patrick Droney
A New Generation Award winner (Robert Johnson)
You forgot Damon Fowler. Damon has been on the blues rock roots scene for several decades and has had a musical influence on several of The guitarists on your list already . The last 3 of his cds have been produced by Tab Benoit as well as he’s currently on Tab Benoit’s- Whisky Bayou Records label. Damon was also the guitarist/singer for Butch Trucks and Dicky Betts Band. Damon Fowler also has a side band with JP Soars (whom won the IBC in Memphis in 2008) and Victor Wainwright called Southern Hospitality which is worth a listen.
I would add Eli cook, from Charlottesville VA
Thanks Martine for these great lists! In my opinion, the top blues rock artist on the planet is Malina Moye! A supreme stylist, guitarist & trail blazer. Also, a community minded person who uses her intellect to better those around her! She truly rocks!
Check out Jake Kershaw. Young, talented guitarist from Kalamazoo Michigan. Saw him open for Samantha Fish. Also enjoy Toronzo Cannon, Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials, Damon Fowler and the Slide Brothers.
Great stuff but I would add Marquise Knox & Blind Boy Paxton!!!
Great list! But, Y’all forgot Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal. Soul and R&B from that real deep place in the heart.
http://www.joshhoyer.com
Very nice to see Artur Menezes and Celso Salim among these great artists! And Kirk Fletcher rules!
Hooten hallers and j Roddy walston and the business
Deserve a listen
Ouch! No Marc Broussard in the Southern Soul/R&B/Blues category? If you don’t know or heard of this guy, you gotta check him out.
Kevin,
You’re absolutely right about Marc Broussard. I mentioned I would accidentally leave some off. Thanks for the reminder.
…if Marc then why not Amos Lee.
Great list! I’ve played many (most?) of these artists on my radio shows in the past couple of years and a dozen are on my current ‘new blues’ shelf at WMHB. I’ve seen several of them live and they are just nice people as well as being great artists. More under the radar favorites: Anthony Gomes, Eliza Neals, Regina Bonelli, Peter V Blues Train. Tony Campanella, Kat Riggins… my Top 100 for 2018, my current Top 40. So many! Thanks for sharing. This is great.
Patrick,
Thank you. Anthony Gomes is in the list. Thanks for the others. Will add.
Taz niederauer
Check out Rob Picazo – http://www.robpicazo.com – and his debut album “Spanish Moss”. Great up and coming English/Spanish blues and soul artist who’s had radio play in the States and in the UK. You have to catch him live. Both solo and with his band he’s a great live performer.
Thanks for championing so many great grassroots musicians. Here in the UK the live music scene is fabulous and many of the young artists doing the local circuits run rings around the wannabes on TV contests. But they hardly get a look in. So a page like yours is a breath of fresh air and much needed.
Alex,
Thank you very much for your comment.
How about Lance Lopez, Dallas, Texas?,,,,Wes Jeans, Marshall Texas,?,,c’mon man! These are rippin’ guitarists, and singers,,they have been layin’ it down hard for years, and are the real deal!
Great list! I’ve heard some of these, and look forward to hearing more.
That said, I would encourage you to check out Joyann Parker and also Ivy Ford if you aren’t already familiar with them and consider adding them to your list. Ms. Parker is based out of the Twin Cities and Ms. Ford is based out of the Chicago area. Both are great multi-instrumentalists and singers, well steeped in soulful blues.
Seasick Steve and Popa Chubby are also great. And also Chantel McGregor from UK
Seasick Steve for sure.
Seasick Steve is one I just stumbled upon and I agree, definetly worth a listen.
Markus King band.. phenomenal
Rules seem to be changing! There is an increasing number of new independent artists, who don’t accept the labels demands, making the music they want to make, financed by crowdfunding.
I recently found a very young girlband from Mexico full of talent “The Warning”. I recomend their second album “Queen of the murder scene”, wich I consider a masterpiece!
Sorry my bad english!!
Thanks for this excellent list, and thanks for the thoughtful, intelligent coverage Rock & Blues Muse gives to these artists. You are one class act!
Richard,
Thank you so much. You’re very kind. Thanks for commenting.
Caffeine Carl / Carl Wagoner Singer, songwriter, blues, rock, jazz . He can be found in Key West Florida playing mostly at the Smokin Tuna but plays all over the Island! Definitely someone to tune into.
Has been know to open for manybig names when they come to his little island home!
The Jimmys out of New Glarus, Wisconsin. Best live Blues I ever saw!
Joe Bonamassa and KWS are not under the radar as well as many on this list who have been out there doing their things for 30 years or more. Anyway I would add Mark Wenner (TheNighthawks) as well as young upstart Daniel Donato. Also a shout out to Coco Montoya and Deanna Bogart.
Dave,
Agreed that they are not under the radar. I my article I stated that and wrote that if someone isn’t already into this music, they might not know of them so I included them. Please read the article. Thank you.
check out:
http://www.hubertdorigatti.com
I don’t see Ruthie Foster. Not sure if it’s because she was forgotten or because everyone knows her already.
Great singer song writer everyone could enjoy
Peter,
Not forgotten at all. Love Ruthie Foster. Have you seen her video with Robben Ford? Anyway, just tried to keep the list to a manageable length but I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter. People just want exposure to these artists and bands.
You Forgot Savoy Brown Still Playing Since 1965
This is WONDERFUL! Thank u for taking the time to boost these fab groups into the limelight. Long live the Blues!
Colleen,
You’re welcome. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hey, hey, The Blues is alright! Avid Blues Supporter here!
I thought of 2 more that I don’t think is on the original list. KENNY NEAL & CLARENCE SPADY….
Please check out Johnny Chops and the Razors from Austin. https://johnnychopsmusic.com
You will not be disappointed!
That’s a great list Martine! I always look forward to your reviews too. I had the pleasure of seeing a group for the first time recently. Mississippi Heat have been around for a while but don’t tour a whole lot from what I can tell. Pierre Lacocque is a blues harp master and the musicianship was outstanding. Chicago blues but with a lot of Delta influences. Funky and tight group.
I also recommend the Jimmys. Jimmy Voegeli is one energized keyboard player. Great musicianship all around and a lot of fun to see and hear.
Joe,
Thank you. Will look into Mississippi Heat and the Jimmys too. Appreciate your tips.
I’m old school–could I send you some of MY sand to the beach?”I ‘d like to send you one of my CD’s, later followed by electronics….Professor Harp
Thanks for the love. We’re out there night after night on tour having fun making music with each other. I feel so honored that me and The Boneshakers are on this list with so many of my favorite artists.. some amazing woman power on this list too… I love that… thank you for including these awesome talented women… Ana Popovic, Larkin Poe, Samantha Fish, Danielle Nicole, Shemekia Copeland, Southern Ave and even more now that I’m learning of. Thanks for this really thoughtful list.
Mindi,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. You’re so welcome. Woman power–you bet. Thank you.
JJ Grey?
Gina Sicilian?
Paul Thorn?
Thanks for Southern Avenue. Do like.
Martine, brilliant article and list. So much great music within the list.
Humbly I would suggest the following additions:
Blues Rock:
North Mississippi Allstars
Rock:
The Magpie Salute
Southern Soul:
The War and Treaty
Donald,
Thank you. And thank you for suggesting those great bands.
Martine you are building a library here and this list will keep growing
Some ones I would throw in are
For southern rock
Otis ( it’s a common band name in Spotify so you would have to look for the album Eye of the Sun
For blues rock A few really good artists are Dave Osti
George Foster, Super Vintage, Frederick Saints, Snake Head Ritual ,68-75, SUN ( Something Unto Nothing) May be a one off but it is a great rockin album with Sas Jordan
Gary,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Library it is and it is growing all the time. Thank you for adding these names. Will look into them.
Great information here…check out John Verity. Blues-rock. English musician, guitarist/singer from Yorkshire. Currently touring the UK with his band. http://www.johnverity.com
Great list Martine,
Check out and add Matty T Wall from australia to the list of blues, blues rock guitarist songwriter, has 2 albums out and his latest Sidewinder is great.
Derek,
Matty T Wall was actually on my list. I tried to reduce the list to a manageable size and took him off. I really like him a lot and Sidewinder is great as you said. Thanks for the comment.
Derek,
Matty T Wall was actually on my original list. When I realized there were over 80 artists, I had to cut down. Sidewinder is an awesome album. I’ll put him back in. Thanks.
Found some great bands from this site…look into the Imperial Crowns…rock blues at best…
Great list. But no Tedeschi Trucks band?
Mark,
Thanks. Tedeschi Trucks are so well known, they were among the bands I left off figuring people knew about them already.
Love the list! As a confirmed blues fan, I’d like to throw in Tad Robinson’s name for blues/soul!! He records on the Severn Records label. Btw, EVERTHING on that label is fantastic!
Fantastic list , many of my favorites in there !
Somebody I really enjoy and have seen with Samantha Fish is Danni Wilde , I think she is British and quite amazing. Also Stevie Salas , rockin for sure.
Thanx 4 the great list ♡
– Kevin
How about The Backsliders, a great Australian band?
Boscoe France is guitarist, singer, song writer and slide player from Madisonville Ky. I am providing two links – One original and one an old blues standard played only the way Boscoe can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGXRNteULfU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_2B3w6ZKA
Magnolia Boulevard is a band from Lexington Ky – Very talented ensemble of musicians, song writers. They are recording their first Demo CD now. They tour the midwest and east coast. I’m including links to two videos of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_n39pjxkRM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55DkHmY8vyo
Hope you enjoy them!
Check out J.D.Simo
Don,
He’s on the list and we’ve interviewed JD Simo and reviewed his albums and his show with Tommy Emmanuel.
Heather Newman, smoking hot blue’s, little woman, BIG voice
https://heathernewmanband.com
Amanda Fish (Samantha’s older sister)
Dustin Arbuckle and the Damnations
And I would be remiss if I neglected to mention one of the best female guitarists (2nd ONLY to Samantha Fish imho)
Ally Venable Band
http://www.allyvenableband.com
James Pitts Band should be on this list
Oh man yeah, there’s a few on this list that really don’t need to be. People know who they and they will be seen. Like – Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Tab Benoit – Tommy Castro – Joe Bonamassa – Jonny Lang – Beth Hart – Anthony Gomes – and a few others.. All great musicians but they really don’t need to be on this list. Throw on Chris Cain, Ronnie Baker Brooks, James PItts, Lance Lopez, Buck And Evans, Dan Patlansky – Bernard Allison, Mr Sipp, Shawn Kellerman and many more.
The list idea is good but most these are bands that people will be hearing this year whether this list was made or not, they are all fairly well known. A list like this should help out the newer artist that YES people SHOULD hear because they are good.
James is amazing and has a hell of show that goes with it. He’s is coming out with a new CD in the next couple weeks or so. He’s up for a BluesTone Award for artist of the year.
Mike,
Please read the article as to why KWS, Jonny Lang, Beth Hart and others are in the list. Bernard Allison is in the list- guess you didn’t read it.
Great list and heard of a lot of them, Lance Lopez is pretty awesome.
Stacy,
Thanks and agree about Lance Lopez.
Finally! Someone who echoes everything my husband and I feel about the unsung heroes in music today! I know a handful on the list (sarah potenza brought me here; LOVE her), and look forward to checking out more. Unfortunately with every “list,” everyone’s gotta whine about where is so and so. Just ADD your faves and move on, people!
Ellen,
Right on.
I’m totally flabbergasted that Layla Zoe was not on this list. Her last release – Gemini (Oct, 2018) is by far the best blues album by a female singer in the last 5 years. She’s been on the scene for 13 years, yet apparently is still an unknown outside of her native Canada. Such a shame!
What about Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band? Nominated for a BMA this year… their new album is fire. Listen the song poor Until Payday.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and mention my new album @Steve Deslippe. I am glad the fans are appreciating, even if some of the journalists and blues societies have not caught on yet ;) Cheers, LZ
Completely agree!! Love Layla!
Craig Erickson deserves a listen
Thank you for this list! The ten, or so, musicians that I’ve heard are so good that I can’t wait to treat my ears to the others. For your listening pleasure, I suggest Toronzo Cannon. The real deal! Thanks again, Martine.
Dan,
So glad you’re enjoying the music! Thanks for the suggestion of Cannon. Third suggestion for him today. Will have to check him out. Thanks.
Great list! Many of my favorites on here. Looking forward to checking out some of the ones I don’t know yet. Someone to add to the under the radar list in my opinion is Corey Stevens. Check out his Blue Drops of Rain album. A lot of SRV and Clapton influences.
Dana Fuchs, Poppa Choby
Eric Lindell
No acoustic blues list is complete without Rory Block. For blues/soul you should check out Kyla Brox from the U.K. And recently won U.K. and European blues competitions, and made a good showing at a competition in Memphis.
Great list! I know most and will enjoy discovering a few more! Suggest adding Ben Poole. Thanks!
Are Drive-By Truckers considered too mainstream? If you include the likes of Joe Bonnamassa, Government Mule and Walter Trout, then the Truckers certainly belong on here.
Marcus King is amazing saw him at Wanee. Just saw this band this weekend. What an amazing guitar with Dr Tim Fik. Bridget Kelly Band. Great blues rock out of Gainesville FL
Thanks for sharing this! Always looking for new talent to hear and there are quite a few on this list.
Charles,
Welcome. Hope you enjoy.
Eric Johanson is another up and coming blues, blues-rock singer/guitarist. He’s on Tab Benoit’s label and Tab played drums on his latest album. We saw him open for Tab (w/Tab on drums) a few years ago, he was fantastic. https://www.ericjohanson.com/
Heath,
He’s a great artist, have reviewed his album and show with Benoit. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Martine
Great article, been spinning blues on the radio for years and noticing some of the callers are getting younger. I’ve played a lot of your list over the years, but missed a few, which I will check out (this could be expensive!!) Can I add The Teskey Brothers, Chris Duarte and Matt Schofield. Thanks for helping keeping the Blues alive.
Pete,
Thank you. Which radio station? I’m so glad you enjoy the tunes. Thanks for the adds. Love Matt Schofield. I’ll look into the other two. Thanks to you for keeping the blues alive.
Hi Martine
Thanks for the reply. I’ve been part of community radio shows for over 20 years. Both shows have been on air for 35+ years. Spoonful of Blues is on Monday night 7 – 9pm, RTR fm 92.1. We have four presenters, all very different in their blues tastes. We play everything from traditional blues through to blues metal, depends who’s in the chair. My other show is Woodstock Rock (10 of us!) Thursday 7-9pm featuring obscurities from 1965 – 76, so I get to pull out some lost gem psych-blues when I’m on, A.B skhy, Fear Itself, Farm, etc.
Cheers Pete..
Dear Martine, so many new impressions – thanx a lot. My recommendation from europe/sweden is Lisa Lystam Family Band.
http://Www.lisalystam.se
Michael,
My pleasure. Thanks for your recommendation. Will check them out.
J.D. Mcpherson, Southern Culture on the Skids, War on Drugs, St.Paul and the Broken Bones and J.J. Mofro are all bands that have to be seen live. St.Paul/Mpls. area has lot’s of great live music of many genre’s.
That’s a good list there
Buddy Flett, from Shreveport, LA—co-wrote Percy Sledge hit, “First You Cry”, just for starters. Also interesting personal story in past decade or so; involving horrifying health issues, and close personal/professional connection with Hubert Sumlin..
Also Jim Suhler (+Monkey Beat), of Dallas, TX. Occasionally has doubled up both with Mike Zito and with Danielle Nicole (my current favorite of entire list!)
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this list of talented artists. Lynne Jackaman is a wonderful rock and soul singer and talented songwriter. Lynne will be supporting two of the artists on your list, Ana Popovic and Southern Avenue, next month. Her debut solo album, One Shot, will be released later this year. Do check out her music.
https://m.facebook.com/lynnejackaman
Tanks, it’s nice to discover some awesome artists. My little cointribution…
Slim Paul
Lady Sorrow : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UVOgQk1rtQ
The sheepdogs
Nobody : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlPIp8DJUEI
Thanks for the list – some new names to listen out for. I would add The Billy Walton Band, Felix Rabin and Kris Barras.
You seem to have forgotten a very important one… Gary Hoey… Who has played alongside many of those you’ve already mentioned, but is a blues artist in his own right.
It´s a greatlist, indeed – but you forgot the greatest of all:
Eric Sardinas
Great List! So cool to see Caroline Wonderland and JD Simo on that list!
I’ve known Caroline and her band since ‘98in Austin and stayed at J.D’s parents house once in Phx when I was on your way back around 96 ish… I remember teaching him a couple of my “ secret” chords when he was just 16 and he gave me a whole box of strings!
I’m working on my own album now. I’d love to send you a copy for review when done?
No Chantel McGregor? But, hey, she’s English… and that’s a foreign country… I know Joanne Shaw Taylor is English, too, but she lives and tours in the US these days. Chantel remains true to her roots in Bradford (where dat?).
Ally Venable is one talented young up and comming artist. She has just released Texas Honey produced by Mike Zito and its smokin hot! If you get a chance to see this young gun believe me you will be wishing she was your daughter slinging that axe.

Heather Gillis, Bruce Katz, Melody Trucks Band
Stoney Curtis, Las Vegas. A great Bluesman.
This is a great list; between the original list and the artists listed in the comments I have a lot of fun research to do in the coming days. Thanks for putting together such a comprehensive list of blues talent. I would like to respectfully request that BB Chung King & The Buddaheads be added to the list. Led by the late, great Alan Mirikitani (may he rest in peace) The Buddaheads (aka The Screaming Buddaheads) were a blues/roots rock band fronted by Alan Mirikitani’s vocals and lead guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asKqrDjTwC4
Chuck,
Thank you. I hope you enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion.
Impossible to make a list like this and not leave somebody out…. But you did pretty good. !
Here’s one you forgot though Mato Nanji from Indigenous.
This one goes back to the first album
https://youtu.be/3nlkcIsIAyE
Michael,
I didn’t forget Mato Nanji. He was in the original list. Love him and Indigenous. First saw him play at Experience Hendrix. The list was so long I had to start cutting. But now I’m thinking I’ll just include everyone I left off. Thanks for your comment.
So correct !
Great list, I’d like to hear em all! Try out Toronzo Canon, Joyann Parker, The Jimmys, JJ Grey and Mofro and Ken Valdez…
Rockin’ Johnny Burgin, Chris O’Leary, Ronnie Baker Brooks. .
Where’s Ally Venable??? She’s burning tracks in the blues world right now!
Eliza Neals,Dana Fuchs,Laura Rain,Muddy Magnolias,Mia Borders,Johnny Sansone,Jon Neneth,Victor Wainwright,The Record Company,Alabama Shakes,JP Soars,Damon Fowler,Albert Cummings,Chris O’Leary, Brandon Santini, Taz Niederauer, anessa Collier, Southern Culture on The Skids,Legendary Shack Shakers,and The Reverend Horton Heat
V
Check out the Scotty bratcher band.scotty is every bit the player that joe bonamassa or kws are.
Ah you gotta have The Cold Stares in here, and I would put them in every category. One of the few bands that spans it all…and with two dudes!
Here’s a few great bands to check out: Eric Sardinas, Paul Deslauriers Band, Ghost Town Blues Band, Crystal Shawanda, , David Rotundo Band, Cheryl Lescom & The Tucson Choir Boys, Wicked Grin, Paul Nelson Band, Shakura S’Aida, Dawn Tyler Watson, Guy Belanger, Harpdog Brown, Julian Fauth, Al Lerman, Ben Racine Band, Demian Band, Delta Moon, Derek MIller, Shawn Kellerman, Digging Roots, Red Dirt Skinners, Indigenous, Jordan Officer, Julian Sas, Justin Saladino Band, Tuatha Dea, Sue Foley, Paul Reddick, Steve Strongman

Shout out to my KENTUCKY boys of Black Stone Cherry! Much love from ELKTON KY!Shout out as well to Government Mule Blackberry Smoke and oh hell yes Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown!
Musician Sean Taylor strongly recommended
Dennis Jones Band is a must.
Oh and a local Jeramy Norris. Did I miss Bonnie Raitt? Daniel Castro, Frank Bang, Laurie Morvan, SugarRay Rayford, Rick Estrin, Popa Chubby, Savoy Brown and Shane Dwight.
David,
Thanks for the additional names. SugaRay was on my list but in an effort cut down to a manageable 50 from 80, he dropped off. But I will add him back in because he’s just too good not to include. Same with Rick Estrin, Savoy Brown and Shane Dwight. Dwight was also on the list! I did not include Bonnie Raitt because she’s so well known to everyone.
You’re right about Jeramy Norris (& the Dangerous Mood)! He’s awesome, a nice guy, fast player, and good backing band. Deserves to step into the bigger league asap.
I appreciate the list and saw a few names that weren’t familiar to check out. I was very surprised Paul Filipowicz, The Hayes Brothers (Charles,PeeWee, JoJo) Oscar Wilson, Rockin Johnny Burgin, Martin Lange, Lee Gates, Toronzo Cannon and Matthew Skoller weren’t mentioned. Pistol Pete, Linsey Alexander, Tom Holland, John Primer, Tony Brown…I could go on but you know it’s never-ending. There are so many phenomenally talented musicians that work hard but never have name recognition beyond their own communities due to lack of funding for promotion/inability to tour/ appearance etc. There are skilled musicians that don’t study the blues masters and end up with a rock, jazz rock or country funk polka sound masquerading as blues because they market it as such perhaps without realizing it isn’t. Too many of those not a lick of blues bands end up on lists , radio and headlining concerts not because they play blues but because they have the financial backing and “look” to do so. There are unknown, great bands playing at the neighborhood bars all over the country. Some of those unknown traditional(and otherwise) blues masters have even been inducted into The Chicago Blues Hall of Fame,
toured the world over and still don’t appear on air or on lists like this. It would be difficult to list every great blues or bluesish band. If that list was ever finished, someone would surely find it incomplete and have more names to add.
Martine, I also co-host a blues radio show. A few others i forgot to mention;JD McPherson, Jason Ricci,Billy Gibson,GhostTown Blues Band,Nick Moss. Mike Welch,. Acoustic blues artist Samuel James,Lightning Malcolm. Cedric Burnside,Grady Champion,Monkey Junk, Ally Venable , Angel Forrest out of Canada and lastly Hazmat Modine out of NYC not just blues but a whole lot of genres rolled into one unique sound
Jim,
That’s cool.
You named a number of really talented artists and bands. Thanks for the additions.
Monkey Junk is a sick band live!!
Such a list… There were several on it that I wonder about being “under the radar” (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tab Benoit, Jonny Lang, Gov’t Mule!, even some of the others), but then maybe my radar has been tuned in for a long time…
On the other hand, there are a lot of names here that I need to check out!
My additions: someone already mentioned The Legendary Shack Shakers; their front man, JD Wilkes, is phenomenal on his own (or supporting the Mourning Glories).
And, maybe they don’t fall neatly into the Blues/Rock/Soul genres, more Americana-ish, but I’d highly recommend a listen to Sugarcane Jane (Anthony Crawford & Savana Lee Crawford).
Kent,
Several are not “under the radar” as I wrote in the article. I included those artists in case people who don’t have their ear to the ground of blues, rock, Southern soul, roots music, hadn’t heard of them. Glad there are some artists that you are going to check out. Thank you for your additions.
Really enjoyed your article here are a few I thought of
Altered Five
AG Wienberger
Anthony Rosano
Ryan McGarvey
Toronzo Cannon
Aynsley Lister
Quinn Sullivan
Leith alSaadi
Oli Brown
Theo,
Thank you and I’m glad you did. Nice list. I’ll be adding in new names shortly and I appreciate your additions.
Great list … but what about Erja Lyytinen, Aynsley Lister, Tedeschi Trucks Band, …
and how can you not include Eric Bibb in the acoustic blues slot?
Roger,
Thank you. And thanks for your suggestions. They are all great artists but Tedeschi Trucks Band is so well known-just about everyone knows of them.
If you noticed, the acoustic blues section was much shorter than the rest. I have not heard much of Eric Bibb’s music, but now I will, thanks to you.
Nate Gross Band and The Lightkeepers both out of Upstate New York
Anthony Gomes live is bad ass!
Nice list!!!!
I forwarded it to my wall to help enlighten my friends.
No way you can list everybody but I would add Stoney Curtis and Sue Foley.
I hope I didn’t just overlook them
Maxie,
Thanks for commenting. That’s why I wrote the article, to enlighten people who don’t know about these artists and bands. So share away. Thank you for your suggestions.
Sister… I thank you for the list. . Many I have seen and now others to look forward to.
From the land of The Zoo Bar, Lincoln Ne

I’ve been watching that young man perform since he blew me away at 13 at the Double Door in Charlotte!
His father, John, has a band too!
Well, it looks as if almost all of my hidden gems have been uncovered (Chris Cain, Daniel Castro, Matt Schofield,Ryan McGarvey) but I still have one that I didn’t see mentioned and I think he is as good as any one on the list…His name is Eric Tessmer out of Austin, Tx……Check him out Martine…here is a link to YouTube….https://youtu.be/wkMpEwKac3s
So many already have covered most all my thoughts as to what a list such as this one entails, but I’m stunned Cole Allen isn’t named; along with Shannon Curfman, Corey Stevens, Ross William Perry.
Just my two cents worth! Thanks for the compilation, it’s going to be a great reward reviewing your picks!
Thanks for this article, Martine. I also strive to find great new musicians and let people know about them. I have a radio show, Rock Under the Radar, which I do live on three stations each week (2 streaming, 1 college, that also streams). A lot of the names in your blues/blues rock section are folks I play on my show frequently. I was so psyched to see Philip Sayce on your list–one of my faves, who not many people seem to know about! A few more who are not on your list: Gary Hoey, Tyler Morris, Chase Walker, Jared James Nichols.
Phew ! Martine you have you have your work cut out for you with all these artists to check out !
But this was a good idea as I am always looking for good new music to listen to. I realize that even within a specific genre of music there can be quite a variety of sounds. That’s what makes music so great!
everybody has his own taste, and that is very good otherwise we all would listen to the same music all our life’s. Of cause there are much more well kmown artists around and some of them are much better musicians as those listed but this is your taste.
I would like to bring you some artist to your attention
Altered Five Blues Band, this ain’t a new comer band, right now they produce their 5th album, 3 of them with producer Tom Hambridge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDeNffeXd3w
Jussie Smith from Australia, a one man band, I would say he is simply the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkJTmwHdOjo
Kai Strauss Electric Blues Allstars, Curtis Salgado, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, Tommy Castro & Painkillers, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jeff Jensen, Fantastic Negrito, Monster Mike Welch, Joe Louis Walker all these fine Harp players like Jason Ricci, Johnny Mastro, Johnny Sansone, Big Harp George, Brandon Santini.

Greetings from Belgium
Please consider Ally Venable and her band in the future and also I did not see Gary Hoey or the Allman Betts Band on this list.
And what about Terry Gillespie our Canadian legend , brother of the blues now with a reggea twist !
Glad to see Albert Cummings on the list. I would also include:
• Robert Randolph and the Family Band
• Alabama Shakes
• Junior Brown
• Reverend Horton Heat
I’m sure the list could go on and on
Rusty,
I completely spaced on Robert Randolph & The Family Band. One of my favs and Get Soul is one of my fav albums of all time. They have a new release coming in August, FYI
It is an honor to be included with so many tremendous artists. The group of 50 shows us that the blues is in good hands in 2019!
I’ve seen many of the artists on your list multiple times and am keeping an eye out for a few of the others. Just got to see Southern Avenue and loved them. My list also contains Dustin Arbuckle & The Damnations out of Witchita, KS and Hamilton Loomis from TX. Oh, and JJ Grey and Roger Clyne &the Peacemakers, and JD McPherson. Oh, and … you get the idea.
Great list, please consider Sonny Landreth and Monty Montgomery
GREAT LIST ! thanks for pointing out sarah potenza, she is a rare gem ! pls add to your list….tyler morris a very young man out of worcester ma, as well as the delta generators, craig rawding, and the heidi nirk band from RI . LONG LIVE THE BLUES !

for example.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysf-rYtPPjc
What about Justin Johnson? He is phenomenal!!
Great list!! Two artists I’d add to the acoustic blues list are Roy Rogers, and especially Dion DiMucci. Dion’s journey to the blues is quite a story, and his blues work later in life is excellent.
Mike Andersen from Denmark..!
He’s a one of a kind..!
You need to check out The Blue Footed Boobies out of Wilmington, NC. They are a 2 piece that are rocking.
http://www.thebluefootedboobies.com/
The Bondi Cigars – Blues & Roots
Imperial State Electric – Rock
Tony Campanella, Taking it to the Streets, Gulf Coast Records ( Mike Zito’s Label) Check it out Awesome !!!!
Lou,
Here is our review on Campanella https://www.rockandbluesmuse.com/2019/04/16/review-tony-campanella-taking-it-to-the-street/
Gary Clark Jr. Is a MUST SEE. Front row at a1200 seat venue blows my mind. Great list. I will favorite the link and add more names to my bucketlist. Anthony Gomes, Markus King tkts in hand. Beth and Joes “Black Coffee” one of my fave vinyls
Eunie
Agree on Gary Clark Jr but considering the number of complaints about Kenny Wayne Shepherd and a couple others being too well known, imagine the complaining about Gary Clark Jr. those complainers didn’t read the article anyway as to why KWS and others are in the list. But I agree with you GCjr is awesome.
Great job, Martine ! Thanks a lot …
Chris Cain, Karen Lovely, Ben Rice, Lisa Mann, Eric Lindell, Kevin Burt, JP Soars, Southern Hospitality, California Honeydrops!!!
Tedeschi Trucks Band. Great band, great music. A must see.
I would also like to add Nikki Hill and her husband guitarist Matt Hill. For a one man band check out Ben Prestage out of Florida. Reverend Shawn Amos out of L.A. Lastly, Vintage Trouble like James Brown meets Led Zeppelin
Found this cool Australian blues rock band called KillWater.
They’ve got an album on Spotify etc
I’m missing The Steel Woods, in the Southern Rock section. Maybe a bit ‘ country-ish’, but definitely a great Southern Rock band, with two albums.
i’d like to see some Dudley Taft Band on here.
https://youtu.be/0bbpLxGDd-Y
Very good list. Here’s an off-the-radar band to check out: The Commonheart. They’ve supported JJ Grey on a few tours and now they’re blowing up by playing major festivals like Bunbury, Tuck Fest (last weekend) and The Ride Festival in Telluride later this summer. Nine-piece soul band from Pittsburgh on their way up.
http://www.thecommonheart.com/
Check out Leroy Miller. Former Smashmouth Guitarist
Good start!!!!! Need to check out JJ Grey & Mofro, Mike Farris and you forgot the Tedeski Trucks Band.\

Eric Tessmer Band from Austin Texas
Freight Train Rabbit Killer from Kansas City
What a great list. I think Kelly Bell should also be considered
One artist that should be included is Hannah Wicklund & the Stepping Stones. Their album had even received great reviews on this site back in Feb. 2018. The album was actually their 3rd album, each of them are great. Hannah Wicklund is a good singer, song writer, and also shreds a mean guitar. She also receives high praise from Joe Bonamossa.
What about IanSiegal and Dana Fuchs?
Karen,
Dana Fuchs is in my follow up article. Thanks for the suggestion of Ian Siegel.
Ben Rice up for 3 BMA,’s out of Portland Oregon
Laith Al-Saadi
http://www.laithalsaadi.com
Saw a young (18, still in High School) talent last night – Jake Kershaw. Currently touring Southern Michigan mostly – once he graduates and is free to tour, who knows where his talent will lead him. He was the opening act for Joanne Shaw Taylor last night, and got a standing ovation. Not many acts could follow his show successfully – luckily we got to see JST also!
This kid is the real deal, has the chops and the voice and is getting his stage presence down. I would check out his Website – http://www.jakekershaw.com or at least check some of his videos out on YouTube. The following is at the same venue that he played last night, but 6 months earlier. Even in that short time, you could see his growth as an artist.
https://youtu.be/zskAoqmRMXg
Check out Michael Hornbuckle. Amazing songwriter, guitarist and singer! YouTube has lots of his performances and songs to see.
Enjoy!
Martine,
For your Blues & Blues Rock list, try Delta Moon.

https://youtu.be/H06gPpZj70E
https://youtu.be/rRcxzg1mlLs
. . . and where’s Sonny Landreth?
Mike Zito is my favourite of them all
Good list. I would add J. Johnson out of STL. Most of all though-Devon Allman. John McVay- STL also….
Glad to see Samantha Fish in the list, seen Samantha & her excellent band in Bristol, UK in May. Getting better every time
Some not in this list but a must to look up & get to see live .. Elles Bailey & her band, with either Jonny Henderson or Stevie Watts on keys ..great addition to Elles sound. New album excellent. Look her up.
An Outstandingly goood list for the blues rock cohort! I am from Australia and am currently on vacation in the US – I’m currently in Boston, heading to DC on Monday then off to Honolulu for a week or so. Last week I was trying to track down the following in Memphis ( a few music stores in Beale Street) Sean Chambers, Gary hoey, Phillip Sayce, Anthony Gomes and Erik Steckel but had no luck there. I would appreciate readers recommending music stores I can check out while in Boston, DC or when in Hawaii. Thanks James
Scott Van Zen should be on this list. Extremely underrated!
What a great list! We see many of these great acts frequently in New Orleans. I would also check out a husband and wife duo – The War and Treaty. They are fantastic live!
Another amazing live band is The Revivalists but they can no longer be considered “under the radar”!
Thanks for your excellent lists. You might consider adding blues guitarist and singer/songwriter David Gogo. His bio information is here: http://www.davidgogo.com/bio.php
Check out Magnolia Bayou
Joshua Cook & the Key of Now
Southern Roots Rock & Blues
Website & Music: https://www.keyofnow.com
Robben Ford, Supersonic blues band, big Al & the heavyweights, delbert McClinton, Toronto Cannon, Ronnie baker Brooks, Bobby Messano, Lil Ed & the blues imperial, Rick Estrin, altered five blues band, Rick Holstrom, Jimmy Thackery,
I missed the great Tab Benoit, Buddy Guy the legend still rocking in his eighties, Quinn Sullivan, Vanessa Collier (amazing)
Gerald,
They are in the follow up article.
I would definitely suggest Adrian Niles
Great list! I am reading it as I am going through the Blues section on iTunes. I just bought one Kenny Wayne Shepherd song from his new album, the Texas Horns – Get Here Quick and I am going to buy Southern Music – Keep on.
I will also bookmark your website so I can go through this list.
Thanks, from Canada, for the work you put into this!
How about Walter Trout?????
Walter Trout was listed
Check out Ryan Hiller from San Diego

https://youtu.be/m0PT3mbWcfc
I have had the pleasure of seeing 17 of the blues bands you have listed. I’ve seen the Kansas City based bands several times when the BUZZ was only local. I hired two off the list for private parties when they performed as Trampled Under Foot with their brother Chris. Big fun! A couple more local favorites of mine Brody Buster and the Bel Airs. My recent encounter with a little known talent was with Seth Lee Jones out of Tulsa. He played before Eric Gales at a recent festival at Knuckleheads Saloon in KC. If you like hearing tomorrows headliners before they are well known , support live music, buy their CD’s don’t forget to tip. It would be a shame if they had to take a 8:00- 4:30 gig instead of a 9:00- 1:00. While we’re talking under known talent try Amanda Fish, Heather Newman. Victor Wainright and Popa Chubby.
Kevin,
You’ve seen some great live music. We’ve featured Brody Buster, Heather Newman, Victor Wainwright, Popa Chubby and more. Type in names in the search bar and they’ll come up. Thanks for commenting.
Matt Schofield , Seth Rosenbloom, Ariel Posen, Derek Trucks
Bekir,
Thank you. Most of these artists are in the follow up article. They are stellar artists too.
Jac,
We just reviewed Charlie Wooten Project, featured Samantha Fish quite a bit, Amanda Fish, plus Eric Johanson, Jeff McCarty (agreed on the Sam Cooke reference) Check the follow up to this article, https://www.rockandbluesmuse.com/2019/05/02/your-additions-to-50-modern-blues-rock-soul-artists-you-must-hear-2019/
Nice list, but missing a few that belong up there:
Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials ( Upbeat blues that make for lots of dancing)
Victor Wainwright (2019 Grammy Nominee)
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears – Great big band sound with lots of great dance music)
Johnny Rawls ( great story teller)
Coco Montoya
Larry Garner (story teller)
Sean Costello
Bob Margolin
Terry,
Thank you for the suggestions. You must not have seen our follow up article https://www.rockandbluesmuse.com/2019/05/02/your-additions-to-50-modern-blues-rock-soul-artists-you-must-hear-2019/
Thanks for commenting.
saw ally ( 20 y.o.) Ally Venable last night. I was as impressed as much ( maybe even a little more) than the first time I saw Samantha Fish or Danielle Nicole for the first time when they were her age. a $10 show, maybe 100 people in attendance. what a deal.
Marquis Knox is fantastic!
THIS IS IN USA, BUT AROUND THE WORLD ARE REALLY GOOD EXPONENETS
BLUES-JAZZ-ROCK ITS A CLASSICAL MUSIC RIGHT NOW
SO WE MUST SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN, IT´S RICHER
I am familiar with most of the names on this list and have seen many of them. Saw Joann Shaw Taylor last night and Larkin Poe last Saturday. You have an EXCEPTIONAL taste in music! The one thing in this article that rang so true is that most people do not know what the are missing…it is not main stream radio (which is sad) it’s just talent. Keep the tunes coming.
John,
I bet JST and Larkin Poe were outstanding live. Thank you for your kind words and for your comment.
I would add to the list Jason Ricci.
Gloria,
Great suggestion. Thanks
Great list, I’ve personally seen 31 of these fine artists perform live! I will be checking out the names I don’t recognize. Thanks, I love checking out new talent! Keep an eye on Sugarmill Slim out of Southern California as an up and comer!
Mark,
That’s awesome you’ve seen so many of the artists. Sure will keep an eye out for Sugarmill Slim. Thanks
Try Blue Moon Marquee. They are especially great live.
Really digging Southern Avenue.
We have an up and coming band over here in the UK- Kriss Barrass band, check them out
Sean, we’ve been featuring Kris Barras Band for a while now. We think they’re great. Type Kris Barras into the search bar on our site and see what comes up.
Delta Moon.
C.W Stoneking, anybody?
Definitely worth a mention
Hannah Wicklund and the Stepping Stones.
Check out the Rainbow Girls:

Definitely need to listen more! Thanks for the suggestions. We are always looking for these new artists and going to see them live when they come around!
Trevor Sewell is from the UK and has some great albums out, check out Hollow, Calling Nashville and Independence.
This is a live video Link – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh5VYpv1yMc
He has collaborated with some interesting people too – Janis Ian, Tracy Nelson Paul Barrere
How Tedeschi Trucks Band didn’t make this list is mind boggling
Joe,
It would be mind boggling if Tedeschi Trucks were not on the other list.
Great list, thanks!
Can I suggest Black Joe Lewis, Australia’s Geoff Achison, Jarekus Singleton, Tom ‘The suit’ Forst and Thorbjorn Risager.
Cheers!
I haven’t read everyone’s comments so some of these may have already been mentioned. Here’s my list:
Ally Venable
Aynsley Lister
Corey Stevens
Danny Bryant
Erja Lyytinen
Julia and the Basement Tapes
Laurence Jones
Robin Rogers
I just thought of another one that shouldn’t be missed: Altered Five Blues Band
Love Tab Benoit. We had a a bit of a personal emergency (toilet) whilst visiting New Orleans and popped into a tiny little bar just off Bourbon Street. Tab was blasting out of the juke box. We stayed a couple of hours. I bought Medicine as soon as I got back to the UK. It is rarely far from the CD player.
Gary Clark Jr.
Great list but Rebecca Downes should definitely be on the list.
I was listening to some blues music and heard a great song, but I forgot the name of the band. He was a new guy and the name had Mississippi in it. White dude with dark hair. Any idea?
Mississippi Heat is my guess . They are really good. North Mississippi AllStars is blues band.
I didnt see Dan Auerbach on here of Jack White ,or Like the Blue Stones …etc
TG
It would be nice to see “ Hey thanks for putting this together” then make your statement. This is free. Do you see advertising? Am I robbing your personal data? No.
HEY yea Thank you I kinda stumbled across this ,thank for your hard work and time,Iam sorry I didnt state that at first .Just was reading through it all and Iam like ,well this and that ,…Any way thanks for it all ,its a great post and so many great Blues Artists on here already
I didnt see Dan Auerbach on here of Jack White ,or like the Blue Stones ,The Revivalists, or Mitch King ,Black Pistol Fire and sooo many others that are kinda leading the way on the “Modern Blues/Rock /Soul ,sound
So glad to discover your website, there are so many incredible young guitarists out there right now that I wasn’t aware of. Thank you for turning me on to some really good music. I truly appreciate it.
Such a top shelf list of artists. Big fans of all. Hoping someday to see OJATA included in the unknowns that are coming up regardless of algorithms on the streaming formats of the day. Extremely grateful for the fans love and support. Love reading the Rock and Blues Muse’s many interviews and takes on the current scene. Thank you for the list.
Be well
Sass Jordan rocks the house, when she doesn’t listen to her A&R guy.
Very cool list. Wondering about your views on popa chubby? I think he spans the blues genres in style.
Sean,
Thank you. We have featured Popa Chubby several times and he is in our follow up article ‘Your Additions to 50 Modern Blues Rock Soul Artists”
What about Indigenous?
How about checking out the amazingly talented John Fairhurst to add to your list of Blues musicians?
His song The Snow Lies Deep was shortlisted for Best Original Song in The British Blues Awards 2013. He has released another two albums since then. Saltwater in 2016 and The Divided Kingdom in 2019 both receiving great reviews, heavy blues for heavy times.
Currently working on new acoustic material and performing / producing a new live stream called The Medicine Show where he was giving away copies of his 2008 debut album The Joys of Spring, a beautiful acoustic instrumental blues discovery that will take you on a timeless journey.
Whether performing solo acoustic or electric band he plays his heart out live! Well worth a watch for all you blues fans!!!
this is a great list… however, I’m not sure how Beth Hart is considered “under the radar”…she has no equal. absolutely the best female vocalist on the planet.
How about Jimmy Thackery?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4P9pvX9SdVE
Martin
Thackery is in one of these two big lists. Couldn’t leave him out.
Thank you, Have been trying the last couple of days trying to remember his name, been searching the web going nuts, glad I kept looking at this thread. Have seen him a few times at Jazzbones in Tacoma, WA
Cool list, looking forward to checking a few artists out!
Like lots of people generating some great conversation above…I feel compelled to add my own absolute favourite!!
Once upon a time….Kieran Kane buddied up with Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplin (three sublime artists in their own right) to form a country, roots, blues ‘supergroup’ called….Kane Welch & Kaplin!
They released a couple of albums that are nice, laid back and extremely cool – everything from slower paced banjo foot tappers to stripped back acoustic blues, at times tipping their hat to old timey country. Great songs, interesting stories, delivered with consummate, effortless singing and the kind of high quality musicianship that sets these high caliber artists apart.
Thanks for putting this list together. I’ve gone through all the comments and have enough good artist suggestions to listen to for a year! It’s great to hear new blues artists. Hopefully we can see them in person soon at some point!

GRAET LIST. THANK YOU FROM INDIA.
I would have dropped Justin Johnson on this list too. Albeit, there are loads of artists I’ve never heard of here. Thanks!
It’s sad that these lists continue to disregard REGGIE KING SEARS. We have very few young people of color in the blues world. Everyone from Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Kingfish, Solomon Burke, Quinn Sullivan, Josh Smith and so many others have sung his praises.
Nice post! There are many good artists on this list, which can be promoted through this article.
But it is not the only way to promote yourself, by example, they can create merchandising. Merchandising not only serves as a source of revenue but also increases brand recognition and fosters a stronger connection with fans. It is a smart investment that can help elevate an artist’s career.
Damon Fowler from Florida, is exceptional in concert! Plays a wicked Lap Steel guitar, and guitar too. Brilliant song writer & lyricist on Sounds Of Home!
